\Artist: J. W. Beaufort (1864-1943)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 76. 5_61_1. 5_cm
Artist : J. W Beaufort ( 1864-1943) Oil on canvas ( unframed) Canvas ( unframed) on it's original stretcher measures 76. 5 cm x 61 cm There is little known about the artist who is believed the be the Guildford-based photographer J. W Beaufort who it has been suggested to be the same person who painted the only other known painting by the painter which is famously positioned in the entrance to the British Natural History Museum in London. That is a portrait by J. W Beaufort of Alfred Russel Wallace OM FRS was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator. The style is remarkably similar and even the background is painted in the same style which raises conjecture as to who the sitter might actually be. Although a photographer by profession Beaufort clearly had a talent for painting portraits and would probably had a successful career in that area of the arts had he chosen to. The painting being offered is therefore extremely rare. Condition report. The painting is in excellent condition . The canvas is unlined and in good tension and there is no apparent paint loss. There has been small amount of historical woodworm to one of the stretcher bars on the verso and we have given it a proprietary woodworm treatment as a precaution . The canvas is in even plane . The colours are still very good and we believe the painting may have been professionally cleaned in recent times.
