Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work is in good condition. It has not been recently restored.
Slight weakness has developed in the thinner pigment of the shadows of the female figure. Old retouches are present in her left ankle, and in a vertical break in her right ankle which extends downwards about 3 inches into the red fabric. There are retouches in and above the white fabric across her upper thigh and in her lower belly. There are other retouches in the center of her torso and in a few spots in her breasts. In her left arm, there are retouches in her forearm and hand. In her right arm, retouches in the shadowed side of her forearm, in her elbow and in her bicep. In her face, there are only a few isolated spots of retouching.
There are no retouches in the flowers in the lower center and lower right. There are only a few spots in the darker background surrounding them. There are retouches in the back of the male figure in the center of the left side, which were probably applied to even out the patina in these lighter areas. The two satyrs above are mostly unretouched, except for the forearm of the figure on the left. Other scattered retouches are visible under ultraviolet light, and the child in the upper right and the blue fabric on which he reclines has received fairly consistent restoration.
The retouches are effective, and if the varnish were slightly freshened, it is recommended that the work be hung as is.

"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Provenance:
Fernand Stuyck collection, Antwerp;

His sale, Brussels, Palais de Beaux Arts, 7-8 December 1960, lot 71.
