It is possibly a large preparatory model for the work of the same title in the National Gallery, Dublin (NGI.46), dated 1630-35, which, given its size and subject matter, was probably intended as an altarpiece. In both works a female figure is depicted beneath the Holy Spirit, personifying the Catholic Faith or Church. Seated on a lion, she holds in her hand a monstrance containing a sacred host, symbol of the Eucharist. The woman is flanked by St Peter, St Paul, St Catherine, St Rosalia and St Sebastian. They are identified by their symbols and vestments, as are the Latin Doctors of the Church below, Saints Augustine, Jerome, Gregory and Ambrose. The Christ Child, holding a cross and a flaming heart, triumphs over death and the Devil.
