Verso - a fragment of an old catalogue description taken from the Abridged Catalogue of the Pictures in the National Gallery Catalogue, 1890, the present work displays many of the fine handling characteristics expected in a work from Tintoretto and the studio overseen by his daughter Marietta, and his son Domenico as Commander of the Venetian forces at the Battle of Lepanto, Oct 1571, Sebastian Venerio was celebrated as a leader of the Christian League in their decisive defeat of the Turks for control of The Mediterranean.
