Drypoint on antique cream laid paper, 1861. 156x286 mm; 6 1/8x11 1/4 inches, wide margins. MacDonald's third state (of 3), with the cancellation lines unobtrusive. A very good impressionof this scarce print.
According to Kennedy, "Only 4 impressions are known before cancellation of the plate." MacDonald notes that the cancelled plate was acquired by the Fine Art Society, London, in 1879, and they issued a small edition (certainly more than the 4 cited by Kennedy). Later, Wunderlich & Co., New York, acquired the plate and published "a fairly limited edition of at least 12 in 1889." Kennedy 81; Glasgow 81....
