James Coignard (1925-2008) "Une agression du rouge en A B" 1976 Carborundum etching, engraving, collage and stitching in 12 colors. On paper handmade at the Moulin de Larroque mill in Couze, France. This work was done in 2 states, black (Aggression Noire) and in color such as this impression. This state adds the color, plus the orange-red line at the right center and the letters. The center figure, which is black in the first state, has been separately printed in color and stitched on to the surface of the print.. James Coignard's prints are sculptural, a kind of "Brutalist" approach using caborundum etching, engraving and collage to create a three dimensional surface, printed both relief and intaglio. He then collages on another small print using a cord to attach it to the support print. Signed by the artist in pencil lower right and numbered 8/60 lower left. In frame and matted measures 26"x30"x1". Weight 11 pds. PROVENANCE: A Private NYC/ Charleston SC Estate. Coignard exhibited in several hundred major galleries worldwide during his lifetime, and his work is represented in many major collections and museums, including the Guggenheim (New York). James Coignard, painter, ceramist, sculptor and etcher, was born in Tours, France on September 25, 1925. At the age of 23 and after a brief career in the French Government administration, he discovered the landscapes of the French Riviera and decides to study at Arts decoratifs in Nice. Four years later, he quit his job at the administration to commit himself entirely to his artistic career. An encounter with gallerist, publisher Paul Hervieu in 1950 was decisive. His collaboration with Galerie Paul Hervieu in Nice made him known in artistic circles, nationally and internationally and particularly in Scandinavia. At the beginning of his career, art critics labeled James Coignard as a member of Ecole de Paris. n the early nineteen sixties, he started to work with glass but the technical turning point occurred in 1968 when his friend Henri Goetz discovered a new etching technique, using carborundum. Etching then became central to his work. At the same time, his career took off internationally. He traveled a lot, especially to Sweden and USA where he lived for a few years. In 1978, James Coignard helped found the etching studio Pasnic, with which he began a long collaboration. During the eighties, he shared his time between Paris and the French Riviera and took an interest in artist’s books and publishing issues. By then he was exhibiting all over the world, and is acknowledged as one of the greatest painter-etchers of his time. James Coignard died on March 7, 2008 at Cannes in the French Riviera.
