JAMES HENRY BROCAS | A BLACK IRISH DRAUGHT HORSE IN A LANDSCAPE

[ translate ]

JAMES HENRY BROCAS
Irish, 1780 - 1846
A BLACK IRISH DRAUGHT HORSE IN A LANDSCAPE

signed and dated l.l.: J.H. Brocas 1835
oil on canvas
63.5 by 76.2cm., 25 by 30in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has a strip lining, and there are areas on the reverse that have been layered with wax. The paint surface is clean with a clear and even varnish. There are scattered lines of discoloured retouching in the sky, notably on the left, mostly to reduce the appearance of craquelure. There is also visible retouching to a restored damage in the shoulder of the horse, as well as scattered small, fine lines in his body. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals this, and confirms more notable retouching in in the hind leg of the horse and in the lower section of his abdomen, as well as in his cheek and jaw. Cosmetic retouchings are also revealed along the margins, in the foreground lower left and in the sky upper right. These are all sensitively executed and do not impede the legibility of the image which is ready to hang in its current state.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."
