Unskilful Carver (A Family Conversation Piece)
oil on canvas
70 x 91 cm (27 1/2 x 35 7/8 in.)

PROVENANCE
Acquired from the artist by King George IV (then-Prince Regent), 1817 (by repute)
Bequeathed by the above to the Royal Collection (by repute)
Collection of V. W. Hancock-Nunn, Esq., by 1957 (label on verso)
Mary Rafferty LTD., Atherton
Acquired at the above by the present owner

EXHIBITED
1817 (entitled The Michaelmas Dinner)

LITERATURE
Alfred Thomas Story, James Holmes and John Varley (London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1894), pp. 85-86 (Chapter IX)

LOT NOTES
Alfred Thomas Story describes the painting as Holmes' unparalleled chef d'oeuvre: It is the most elaborate and studied of his works, and may be taken as a good example of his style, and also of the kinds of subjects he preferred to treat, which, belonging to a popular, sometimes, it may even be said, to a vulgar class, allied him to the Dutch more than to the Italian school.

CONDITION
Observed in frame, the painting is in overall good condition appropriate with age. Areas of craquelure are visible throughout. Partly detached from the frame. Minot tear on the upper right corner. Inspection under UV light shows no apparent areas of restoration.

N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others.
