BACKGROUND:
Originally trained as a billboard painter, James Rosenquist (1933-2017) often borrowed both the format and overall visual hierarchy when addressing his fine art output. As demonstrated in these four prints, the artist combines imagery straight from pop culture with art-making techniques that layer and define the composition. While separate compositional elements are usually discernible in form and placement, Rosenquist takes great care in determining which printmaking medium and method would best serve his means to a unified end.
