Support
The painting is on an oak panel that appears to have been thinned and then inset into a secondary oak tray. The back of the tray has also been cradled, probably to hide some of the evidence that it has been altered and possibly to restrict any possible movement of the support.
The tray consists of a single piece of oak with raised, 5 mm wide borders down each side which are part of the same piece of timber. The original, thinned panel has then been glued into the space between the two borders after which 5 mm wide oak strips have been glued across the top and bottom edges to hide the join between the painted panel and the tray. As a result the panel appears from the sides and back to be a single, homogeneous piece of wood with the only clue to the alterations being the plain wooden strips around the outer edges of the painted surface.
The reason behind this panel work is not clear. However, it may have been carried out because the original panel was warping and this intervention was seen as a way of stabilising the support. The original panel was probably thinned to about 2-3mm in thickness before being glued to the secondary tray panel.
The construction, which probably dates back to the late 19th century, appears to be totally stable and there are no signs of any warping or splitting in the timber on the front surface. The cradle is also not causing any problems at present although all the runners, which should move easily if the panel was completely flat, are now quite hard to push in either direction indicating that there has been some minor movement over the years.
Paint layers
The paint layers appear to be in exceptionally good state of preservation. Under ultra-violet light it is possible to identify a few minor retouchings, mainly following the wood grain in the sky where the paint is characteristically a little thin, but otherwise there are no significant interventions by previous restorers and the work has survived in remarkably good condition.
Varnish coating
The painting has a moderately yellow varnish and could possibly benefit from being cleaned.
