Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This picture is in good condition overall, with the paint layers nicely intact in general. The painting is beautifully restored, with careful retouching to address a scratch through the red garment, a concentration of tiny losses in the bottom left corner, and a compound tear (repaired) that runs through the man's shoulder and into the woman's arm. Retouching also addresses abrasion in the woman's breasts, a result of the addition and later removal of a (non-original) scarf designed to increase the modesty of the composition. The painting has been lined, presumably to address the tear, and subsequently strip-lined. The canvas is planar and strongly tensioned. The varnish is evenly glossy. This painting may be enjoyed in its current state and the present restoration should last for many years to come.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
