(JAPAN -- AVIATION.) Group of 6 map items related to the Kamikaze and Nippon airplanes.

Estimate $800 - 1,200

The Kamikaze was a Japanese aircraft designed and modified to make long-distance flights. In 1937 it became the first Japanese-built plane to fly from Japan to Europe, logging 51 hours on a trip from Tokyo to London. The flight was piloted by Masaaki Iinuma, with Kenji Tsukagoshi providing the navigation. The design tested the range of distance Japanese planes could successfully fly and was a precursor to the reconnaissance and bomber planes used in World War II. The Nippon was a modified Mitsubishi G3M2 bomber that successfully made a 55-day round-the-world-flight in 1939. The present lot comprises the following related items:

1. Sekai Isshu Dai Hiko Chizu. Large offset color-printed map showing the route of the Nippon with flags of the countries it passed through and a depiction of the craft at the top. 30 1/2x43 inches; original folds, light marginal spotting. Showa 14 (1939).
2. Similar map to above on a smaller scale. 15 1/2x21 inches; light foxing; verso printed with a cartoon. Showa 14 (1939).
3. Printed silk kerchief depicting the Nippon and its flight route bordered by musical notation for a song celebrating the voyage. 13x13 inches; folded; housed in original box. Showa 14 (1939).
4. Kamikaze Ki London-o Shuppatsu Ichiro Tokyo-e Mukatta. Kamikaze flight poster with a large portrait of the plane and a simple map of the route from Tokyo to London. 31x21 inches; original folds, light foxing, small edge repairs. Showa 12 (1937).
5. Kamikaze poster with photos of the plane and faces of the pilot and navigator. 31x21 1/2 inches; folded; fine condition with unused blank space which would have been intended to attach photos of the event. Showa 12 (1937).
6. Imakita Kinzoku K.K. (manufacturer). Small globe pencil sharpener with flags of the world. Color-printed metal, approximately 1 1/2 inches; small areas of wear or pitting. Circa 1937.
