Original pictorial silk covers with bevelled edges, spines sewn in the Japanese manner. 14 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches (37.5 x 31 cm); 382 pp. text, with 60 large format and 200 small format hand-tinted albumen photographs, 10 collotype prints of flowers, 30 examples or reproductions of original Japanese artworks, photographic frontispiece of Emperor Mutsuhito in Volume 1. A very fresh set overall, some very light wear.
Of the many editions of Brinkley's opus, the Emperor's Edition is generally considered to have the best quality prints in terms of tone and quality of coloring. We have compared this with another deluxe edition (the Mikado) and the quality of the photographs is generally significantly superior.
