[ translate ]

JASPER FRANCIS CROPSEY
1823 - 1900
AN OCTOBER DAY

signed J.F. Cropsey and dated 1886 (lower right); also signed J.F. Cropsey, titled An October Day and dated 1886 (on the reverse prior to lining)
oil on canvas
12 by 20 inches
(30.5 by 50.8 cm)

This painting will be included in the forthcoming Volume III of the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work to be published by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work has been restored. The lining is applied with wax and has a transparent window to reveal an original inscription on the reverse. In the center of the sky, there is a fairly large restoration which starts in the horizon by the church spire and runs almost into the sun in the upper center. This probably addresses some kind of structural issue. There is a restored break in the canvas on the right side beginning above the date in the lower right running to the upper right corner. There are other spots of restoration in the upper right and upper left sky. The landscape is in better condition, but it is slightly thin around the church spire in the center. The lining is very heavy and could be improved, but the work could also be hung in its current state.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Victor Spark, New York

Private collection, circa 1970 (acquired from the above)

Private collection, Washington, D.C. (by descent; sold: Sotheby's, New York, March 23, 2005, lot 47)
