J.D. Salinger (1919-2010)

Catcher in the Rye. First Edition in the First Issue Jacket.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951.

First edition, octavo; bound in publisher's gilt-lettered black cloth; in the unclipped first issue dust jacket with the dollar sign just above the shoulder of the "R" on the inside front flap and the author's head just cut off on the rear panel portrait (toning, especially at verso, minor creasing and edgewear; surface abrasion to title and gutter of following page, scattered corner creases, couple marginal spots and foxmarks; extremities bumped, minor fraying at board edges, spotting to upper edge of block, short tear to lower edge of rear flyleaf); 7 ¾ x 5 ¼ in.

Salinger's debut novel Catcher in the Rye remains a cornerstone of American literature whose protagonist, Holden Caulfield, is the epitome of teenage confusion and angst.
