On the verso are many printed clippings about the artist pasted to the stretcher bars by the collector.This charming Biblical scene of Jonah and the whale is a typical subject for this well-regarded modern Haitian painter. Jean-Baptiste Botex was from Port Margot in northern Haiti. Largely self-taught, Bottex painted both scenes from the Bible and of daily Haitian life. His works were displayed at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. He and his younger brother, Seymour Bottex, (born 1922) , also a noted painter, shared a studio where they trained youger artists.
