Jonah et la Baleine.

Oil on cotton canvas, 1970. 406x502 mm; 16x19 inches. Signed and dated "2/70" in oil, lower rightProvenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Toronto (1971) . On the verso are many printed clippings about the artist pasted to the stretcher bars by the collector.This charming Biblical scene of Jonah and the whale is a typical subject for this well-regarded modern Haitian painter. Jean-Baptiste Botex was from Port Margot in northern Haiti. Largely self-taught, Bottex painted both scenes from the Bible and of daily Haitian life. His works were displayed at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. He and his younger brother, Seymour Bottex, (born 1922) , also a noted painter, shared a studio where they trained youger artists.
