Jean Després was born in Avallon, France in 1889, and at the age of 16 moved to Paris as an apprentice for a jewelry and metal workshop.
During this time he became close friends with Georges Braque, and was influenced by other avant-garde artists including Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. During World War I, Després found employment making aircraft parts, a job which would strongly influence his jewelry designs and his incorporation of utilitarian materials and shapes.
Després work was highly regarded and collected by celebrities such as Josephine Baker and Andy Warhol in addition to being exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
