JEAN DUNAND | PAIR OF SIDE TABLES

[ translate ]

JEAN DUNAND
PAIR OF SIDE TABLES

circa 1921
lacquered wood, brass
each branded JEAN DUNAND LAQUEUR
28 x 12½ x 13¼ in. (71.1 x 31.7 x 33.5 cm) each

Condition Report:
Overall in good condition. When viewed in person, the tables present with a rich and bright red lacquer surface that pairs very well with their delicate and curvy form. The lacquer presents with crackling to the surface, noticeably larger to the top of one table (the largest running across the tabletop and measuring approximately 10 inches long) as well as on the sides and corners of both tables, which is consistent with age and natural evolution of the medium. The sides and legs of both tables present with the inclusion of black lacquer to the surface, which is inherent to the production and creates a rich contrast of tones and adds dimensionality to both works. The brass drawer knobs with very minor areas of loss to the gilding consistent with age and not visible unless closely inspected. The drawers are fully operative, the inside of one lacquered in black, the other lacquered in red. This pair of side tables is particularly rare and an important example of Dunand’s large-scale use of red lacquer.
