JEAN DUNAND
SIDE TABLE

circa 1925
lacquered wood, coquille d'œuf
branded JEAN DUNAND LAQUEUR
18 x 19¾ x 19¾ in. (45.7 x 50.1 x 50.1 cm)

Condition Report:
Overall in good condition. This rare side table model combines black lacquered feet with an eggshell tabletop, and constitutes a superb example of Duand’s use of eggshell on a square-shaped side table. The lacquered surface shows scratches and crackling to the lacquer concentrated to the sides of the tabletop and legs, and consistent with age and the natural evolution of the medium. The side edges and upper portions of the legs present with areas of very minor discoloration to the lacquer as well as areas of sensitive restoration to the lacquer, which are not visually distracting. The eggshell surface retains its original brightness and complex structure and presents with rich and textural tones ranging from burnt sienna to ice white, adding a depth and additional dimensionality to the work. Some eggshell particles with minor darkening spots to the surface consistent with age and natural evolution of the medium. The tabletop with two minor dents to the eggshell area, which are not visible unless closely inspected. This piece with remarkable sculptural presence is stable and ready for use and display.
