This painting is characteristic of the work of Jean-Gaspard Heilmann and can be dated to 1759, in the late phase of the artist's career. Jean-George Wille (1715–1808), a close friend of Heilmann and author of the artist's biography published in the work edited by Johann Caspar Füssli (1706–1782), records the works held in the collections of his friends between 1765 and 1770.

In his work, he probably mentions this specific piece as well as a pendant that was in the collection of Johann Martin Usteri (1738–1790). This painting was mentioned several times in correspondence between Wille and Usteri.

We thank Dr Julie Pouillaude for her scholarly assistance in cataloguing this lot.
