Property from a Private Southwestern Collection
JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME
French
1824 - 1904
THE GRAND WHITE EUNUCH
signed J. L. GEROME. (lower right)
oil on canvas
24¾ by 19¾ in.
62.9 by 50.2 cm
Condition Report:
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: Not examined out of the frame. This work is in excellent condition. The canvas is unlined. The tacking edges have been reinforced to allow for safe stretching. A piece of canvas has been stretched over the reverse of the original canvas, but this is not adhered to the work. The paint layer is in particularly good condition. Under ultraviolet light, four small retouches are visible in the fur collar of the eunuch’s coat, and there are two tiny dots of retouching around the baths, neither of which interfere with the figures. The work should be hung as is.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
