JEAN MAURICE CARTON (Paris, 1911-1988).
"Young man standing".
Bronze, copy 3/6.
With founder's stamp.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Measurements: 73 cm.
Jean Maurice Carton's work revolves around the human figure, and this "Young man standing" very clearly exemplifies his art. It represents a boy with a resolute attitude and softly moulded features, free of his attire. The anatomy and details of the face are worked with special attention to detail, realistically reflecting the bodily qualities.
Although Jean Maurice Carton initially wanted to become a furniture maker, his teachers Charles Malfray and Robert Wlérick encouraged him to devote himself to sculpture. He thus entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1928. He took part in the Salon des Tuileries in Paris in 1942-1944 and in the first Salon de Mai in 1945. He also took part in foreign exhibitions in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cairo, the United States and Canada. In 1946 he received the Blumenthal Prize for his works. In 1949 he had a solo exhibition at the Galerie Bernier in Paris. In 1964 he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and was a member of the Society of French Painters and Engravers. In 1988, a major exhibition was held at the Musée de la Poste in Paris. Les Jumelles, one of his works, was exhibited in the gardens of the Elysée Palace. He was also an outstanding etcher and illustrator.
