ProvenancePrivate Collection, ParisLiteratureExhibition catalogue, 'Jean Prouvé: Constructeur', Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, October 1990 - January 1991, (illustrated p. 120)Peter Sulzer, 'Jean Prouvé, Complete Works', Vol. 1 1917-1933, Basel; Boston, [1999 - c. 2008] p. 42 (illustrated), p. 229ExhibitedJean Prouvé: Constructeur, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 24th October 1990 - 28 January 1991Peter Sulzer notes in the Complete Works that there are two known examples of this light, of which this is the only one signed. Exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, in 1990-1991, it is an early example of Prouvé's work, produced shortly after he established his workshop in Nancy in 1924. By 1926, still a young man and a member of the avant-garde Comité Nancy-Paris, Prouvé had already forged a large ceiling canopy, light fittings and furniture for the Palais de la Bière, Nancy, as well as an entrance grille for Pavillion de Nancy at l'Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs, 1925. The exhibition exposed Prouvé to modernism, and introduced him to new forms and techniques. Prouvé produced constructional designs that largely eschewed the ornamental and he never centered aesthetic form as his starting point, rather the form of his works was an impersonal result of the logical and constructional concepts that created it. This characteristic principle of Prouvés designs formed a style that would not become widespread until the 1940s and 50s, and rather than being impersonal, his products are recognisable and carry individual expression.
