Delphin Massier (1836 - 1907) and Clément (1845 - 1917) were brothers. Their cousin Jérome (1850 — 1916) worked with them - until 1899 they had a stamp signature with “Jérome Massier fils”. After that, they expanded and the seal changed, as can be seen here.
Her works create a connection between traditional Victorian majolica and Art Nouveau pottery.
In a particularly dramatic way, the artists used the technique of flambéed copper oxide glazing, a method originating from China during the Sung Dynasty (960-1280), in which the furnace is highly ventilated and low in oxygen (reducing atmosphere). The flaming technique practiced by the Maseros also included the technique of glowing Hispano-Moorish pottery. A previously glazed piece was covered with a metallic silver or copper oxide and “Petit Feu” was fired again at a very low temperature. The resulting new palette, more intense than subtle, included colors that were previously unknown to majolica: powder gold, speckled turquoise, willow green, orange yellow, pink, purple violet and peacock blue as well as flamed and solid shades of red.Show more
