JOSEPH JOHN "JOE" ROSENTHAL (1911-2006). Joe Rosenthal was an American Photographer who received the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic World War II Photograph Raising the Flag atop Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima, taken during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima.
January 22, 1995-Dated, "Boston Sunday Globe" Magazine Cover Signed, "Joe Rosenthal / AP Photographer / Iwo Jima / 1945", 10" x 11.5", mounted to heavy stock and matted for display, measuring fully 13" x 17.5" overall. Rosenthal signs in bold vivid blue ink, slightly shaky, owing to signing of this image is accomplished much later in his life. One of the most famous military images ever taken, specially for World War II, here signed by the photographer himself. After five days of ferocious fighting, U.S. Marines raise the American flag atop Iwo Jima's highest point on February 23, 1945. Two days later, Joe Rosenthal's photograph of the unposed American Flag-raising photo atop Mount Suribachi, was on the front page of Sunday papers across the U.S. The acclaimed photographs image won him the Pulitzer Prize that same year.
