JOHANN HEINRICH TISCHBEIN THE ELDER (HAYNA 1722-1789 CASSEL)

Tischbein was one of the most successful members of the large Tischbein artistic dynasty from Hesse, spanning three generations. He first trained in Kassel under the guidance of Johann Baptist Zimmerman (1680-1758). In 1744, he became a pupil of Carle van Loo (1705-1765) in Paris and in 1749, he went to Venice to train under Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) where he copied both Titian and Veronese. In 1751, he returned to Kassel and became court painter to Landgrave William VIII von Hesse-Kassel (1682-1760). He was very influential in Northern Germany and was appointed by Frederick II (1720-1785) as a professor at the newly created Kassel Art Academy in 1776. In addition, he became an honorary member of the Clementine Academy of Bologna by 1779.
