JOHANNES ADAM SIMON OERTEL | UNTITLED (CAVALRY ESCORT)

[ translate ]

JOHANNES ADAM SIMON OERTEL
1823 - 1909
UNTITLED (CAVALRY ESCORT)

signed J.A. Oertel and dated 1867. (lower right)
oil on canvas
28 by 49 inches
(71.1 by 124.5 cm)

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes, Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work is in good condition. The canvas has a very old lining and the stretcher is probably original. The paint layer seems to be dirty. Under ultraviolet light, no restorations are evident due to the milky old varnish. Under close examination with the naked eye, there is no reason why the work would not clean well. Once the varnish is removed, very slight thinness in the darkest colors of the donkey and horse in the center may become apparent, but the condition seems to be good overall.

Please note this work is being sold unframed.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
