[ translate ]

JOHN ATKINSON GRIMSHAW
1836-1893
OCTOBER AFTERGLOW

signed and dated l.r.: Atkinson Grimshaw/ 1885
oil on canvas
77 by 63.5cm., 30¼ by 25in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has been lined.

Some areas of fine craquelure notably to the trees in the left and righthand areas of the composition. Rubbing and abrasion visible to the framing edges, with some associated paint loss and gilt residue from the frame. The work appears clean and is in fair condition.

UV light inspection reveals what appears to be restoration and retouching to horizontal and vertical tears in the centre of the composition. A further area of horizontal retouching in the trees in the upper left. Some minor flecked retouching to the house and to the lower lefthand framing edge. Some infilling to craquelure centre right. A heavy layer of opaque varnish in the lower portion of the canvas, which obscures more accurate reading.

Held in a black painted frame with a cloth slip.
