JOHN BIGGERS (1924 - 2001)
The Kiss.

Conté crayon on cream wove paper, circa 1975. 965x647 mm; 38x25½ inches. Signed in conté crayon, lower left.

Provenance: private collection, Louisiana.

After taking a two-year hiatus to focus on the Fine Art department at Texas Southern University, John Biggers returned to his studio practice after visiting the 1974 exhibition African Art of the Dogon: The Lester Wunderman Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The exhibition was his re-awakening to the power of West African art and culture. The Kiss is inspired by Dogon architecture and the idea of a primordial, ancestral couple; it typifies Biggers' new approach to the human form in the mid-1970s. Wardlaw pp. 54-55.
