JOHN BRATBY, R.A. | BIRLING GAP II WITH CLEAR SKY

[ translate ]

Property from the Antoinette and Patrick Murphy Collection

JOHN BRATBY, R.A.
1928-1992
BIRLING GAP II WITH CLEAR SKY

signed; titled on the canvas overlap; inscribed on the stretcher bar
oil on canvas
119.5 by 86.5cm.; 47 by 34in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is original. There are instances of flattening and loss to raised areas of impasto in places. There are scattered isolated instances of fine lines of craquelure, including to the lower right of centre and towards the lower right corner, with further more minor instances elsewhere. There is a small scuff to the work in the lower left corner. There are some small instances of accretions within the paint surface and studio detritus and surface matter. There is surface dirt to the work and a discoloured varnish. This excepting, the work appears in very good overall condition.

Inspection under ultraviolet light is rendered difficult by the thick layer of varnish but there are no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching.

The work is housed in a metal frame.
