[ translate ]

Property from the Collection of Bernard & Josephine Chaus
JOHN FREDERICK HERRING SR. AND JAMES POLLARD
British
1795 - 1865; 1792 - 1867
THE DEAD HEAT FOR THE DONCASTER GREAT ST. LEGER, 1839

indistinctly signed J.F. Herring and dated 1839 (lower right)
oil on panel
20⅛ by 29½ in.
51.1 by 75 cm

Condition Report:
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: Not examined out of the frame. This work is painted on a panel which is flat with no reinforcements on the reverse. The paint layer is stable. The architecture, figures, animals and foreground are unretouched, except for a few small spots in the neck and shoulders of the black horse in the lower right. In the sky, retouches have been added to address some panel grain that has become more visible over time in the clouds above the grandstand on the right, and in the cloud above the smaller stand in the center left. These retouches in the sky are not unexpected for a work of this period, and the condition is very good overall. The varnish is slightly dull and could be improved, but the work could also be hung in its current state.

"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
