John J. Boyle was an important sculptor in Philadelphia in the last part of the 19th Century. In 1897 he was commissioned to create a seated figure of Benjamin Franklin, to be erected in front of the post office where Franklin first conducted experiments with electricity. The monument was widely commended when it was dedicated in 1899.
