Watercolor painting by John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) showing a creek through a countryside. Signed at lower left. Titled "On the Darein Creek" with inventory number 103. Overall framed size is 15" x 20 1/2". Excellent condition. Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
