Watercolor painting by John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) showing trees on a hillside. Titled "South Australia" with inventory number 5. Overall framed size is 13" x 15 1/2". Excellent condition. Unsigned. Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
