Watercolor painting by John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) showing a mountain landscape. Signed at lower left and dated to 1912. Titled "Lyttleton, New Zealand" at lower right corner. Overall framed size measures 20" x 24". Excellent condition. Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
