JOHN MATHER, WC, Riddell's Creek

Watercolor painting by John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) showing a rocky creek. Signed at lower left and dated to1884. Titled "Study of Rocks - Riddell's Creek" verso. Overall framed size measures 20" x 23". Good condition with some toning. Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
