JOHN MATHER, WC, Swamp Phillip Island

Watercolor painting by John Mather (Australian, 1848-1916) showing marshland. Signed at lower right and dated to. 1913. Titled "Swamp Phillip Island" on label with inventory number 99. Overall framed size measures 20 1/2" x 25 1/2". Excellent condition. Mather was Scottish and migrated to Australia in 1878. He was a painter in oils and watercolors, as well as a prolific etcher. Leader of many artist societies in Australia, he was also associated with the plein-air artist camps that grew around Sydney in the late 19th century. Three of his works are owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
