In this marble Jorge Blanco Villalta makes a portrait of great naturalism, worked with a fluid and meticulous chiselling that reflects the features of the man's face with marked realism. The sculptor focuses entirely on the face, adding elements that allow us to identify the man as a badly wounded soldier, with a gauze on his head.
Jorge Blanco Villalta was a sculptor, doctor, musician and diplomat. He cultivated the costumbrista genre and was recognised as the forerunner of Argentinean sculptural art by José León Pagano in El Arte de los argentinos (The Art of the Argentines). He loved the things of his land, and was captivated by the typical inhabitant of the Argentine pampa. One of his most successful creations is Jornada larga, a work full of unusual expressiveness. In 1916 he sent a project for a Monument to the Gaucho, one of his favourite themes, to the National Salon.
