JOSEPH CHRISTIAN LEYENDECKER
1874 - 1951
STUDY FOR 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS'

oil on canvas
23 by 20 inches
(58.4 by 50.8 cm)

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work has not been recently restored. The canvas is lined onto a heavy linen with wax as an adhesive. The stretcher is not original. There do not appear to be any tacking edges to the work, and it may be that the work was never stretched originally. The paint layer in areas of the figures and the clothing is noticeably thin, which seems to be original. The buttons, the hands, the face of the mother and other elements are visibly un-abraded.

Under ultraviolet light, one can see restorations to tidy up the extreme edges after stretching. There are broad restorations around the figures and the hands. In general, most of the fluorescent colors under ultraviolet light in the background do correspond to retouching, although a few marks may be original.

The restoration could be re-examined, but retouching to rough unpainted background areas in these works is not uncommon.
