JOSEPH DECAMP, Portrait of Abraham Lincoln

[ translate ]

Joseph DeCamp (American, 1858-1923). Dated 1897 lithograph portrait of Lincoln, signed. Exceedingly rare piece, commissioned personally by printer Louis Prang in 1896. This was to be part of a series of famous Americans' portraits by Prang, but -- according to a 1930 letter from a Prang employee -- production was halted in 1897 after fewer than a dozen of these were taken from the stone. This one is numbered 5 of 100 (which was the originally intended run) on a label affixed to the back of the print itself. The only other known example is in the Boston Library collection. Joseph DeCamp was one of the most famous portrait artists at the time and was paid $500 to make stone portraits of Lincoln and Webster for Prang. Lithograph framed to 30-1/2" x 23-1/2". Not laid down. (Frame's brass tag incorrectly states that it was copied from a painting by Thomas Hicks. This work was entirely DeCamp's, an image drawn from a photograph of Lincoln, curiously a photo showing him without a beard.)
Condition Report: Toning. Good condition overall. Please check the shipping details in our terms and conditions*
