There is a set of photographs which shows Vettriano posing with a model in his studio in Nice, trying different compositions for this work. Vettriano plays the male lead - 'not because I want to be that man, but because I am available, the cheapest model I know'. (T. Rawstorne, Jack Vettriano: Studio Life, London, 2008, p. 70-71).
The rose design that is depicted on the man's chest is similar to a tattoo that the artist has on his left shoulder.
