Jackson, John Baptist (1701-1780), incisore; da Vecellio, Tiziano (1488/1490-1576), - Il martirio di San Pietro Martire

[ translate ]

The martyrdom of Saint Peter Martyr, who fell to the ground; his attacker stands over him, tears his cloak, and is about to strike him with his sword; on the left his brother Domenico turns around in horror; after the destroyed painting by Titian already in the SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice.

This print reproduces, probably as a counterpart, a panel painting begun by Titian in 1528 and delivered in April 1530 and placed on the altar of the Confraternity of San Pietro Martire of the church of SS. Giovanni and Paolo in Venice.

Transferred to Paris following the Napoleonic suppressions, the color was transferred from the panel to the canvas. Returned to Venice, where it was exhibited in the Rosary chapel of the original church, it was destroyed in the fire of 16 August 1867
