This painting depicts the old Haarlemmerpoort (known as Willemspoort since 1840), one of Amsterdam's city gates. It was designed by Hendrick de Keyser in 1618, but had to demolished in 1837 after falling into a state of disrepair. It was then replaced by the current strong-walled structure.
