Description: This original print was made by Jacob Matham after Albrecht Durer. The original painting by Durer was made in 1505, this engraving was published in 1615 by Joan Goyvaerts. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Artists and Engravers: Jacob Matham (1571 - 1631) , of Haarlem, was a famous engraver and pen-draftsman. He was the stepson and pupil of painter and draftsman Hendrik Goltzius, and brother-in-law to engraver Simon van Poelenburgh, having married his sister, Marijtgen. He made several engravings after the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens from 1611-1615. Subject: Plate: 'Golgotha. ' (The Great Calvary) . A crowded and complex figure composition with a combination of Passion scenes. This includes the Scoffing, Flaggelation and Crucifxion of Christ. The procession with Christ carrying the cross can be seen in the background, with soldiers foling out of the city gates. The crucifixion is depicted in the middle of the image, with Mary Magdalen lamenting at the foot of the cross. Very rare monumental print. Attractive despite it's imperfections. Condition: Fine. Paper slightly browned. Paper loss bottom right corner and several spots at top, backed by similar hand laid paper and retouched. Several smaller tears in the edges, backed. Some small holes and worm holes. Several creases. General age-related toning and/or occasional light stains from handling. Please study scan carefully.
