Jacob Philipp Hackert

The Fiume Incastro with Ariccia in the Background

Oil on canvas (relined). 64 x 83 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Philipp Hackert / del Romae 1773.

In this composition, Jakob Philipp Hackert reiterates a compositional type which he developed in 1772 (Nordhoff and Reimer, op. cit. p. 30). A river winds into the distance towards a town at the foot of a mountain. In the foreground figures rest on the riverbank. The river is the Incastro and we recognise the town of Ariccia by the characteristic dome of the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo in the background. Hackert visited and painted this area south west of Rome - the Alban Hills, Castel Gandolfo, and the two great lakes of Nemi and Albano - numerous times.

Provenance

The Maxara collection, Munich. - Auctioned by Hugo Ruef, Munich, 22.-24.6.1977, lot 391. - Italian private collection.

Literature

Claudia Nordhoff & Hans Reimer: Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807. Verzeichnis seiner Werke. Berlin 1994, vol. 2, p. 30-31, no. 77.
