Jacob Roos known as “Rosa da Napoli” (Rome, 1682 – Naples, 1730)
Rural scene with goats and sheep
Oil on canvas, 39 x 55 cm
With frame, 50 x 67 cm

The canvas in question, depicting a rural scene with goats and sheep, can be dated back to the 18th century and attributed to the hand of the painter Jacob Roos, also known as "Rosa da Napoli" (Rome, 1682 - Naples, 1730) . Firstborn of the great artist Philip Peter Roos, nicknamed "Rosa da Tivoli" (1657 - 1706) , in whose workshop he received his first training, Jacob Roos can be considered one of the best animal painters active in Naples at the beginning of the eighteenth century .
Born in Rome in 1682, he learned the art from his father (documented in Italy from 1680) and was profoundly influenced by the Capitoline landscape taste.
The work, which presents as its subject a young shepherd from behind with his flock of goats and sheep, reveals all its aesthetic value and sensitivity typical of Rococo genre landscape painting through a modern, calm and Arcadian atmosphere. The colors are warm, dark and earthy, while the brushwork is quick and decisive: note, for example, the fur of the animals, rendered clearly and realistically with just a few strokes of colour.
The canvas can be inserted into the tradition of genre painting of animals, which experienced extraordinary success especially starting from the seventeenth century, when the original connotation of "inferior genre" began to decline in favor of a renewed interest in scenes of everyday life, rural scenes and interior scenes. The scenes of daily life, mostly small in size, became an indispensable element in the furnishing of bourgeois homes, reaching the highest expressions.

The frame is provided free of charge, therefore it cannot be a reason for return or complaint.

For paintings purchased abroad: after payment the procedure to obtain the export license (ALC) will be started. All antiques sent abroad from Italy need this document, issued by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The procedure could take 3 to 5 weeks from the request, therefore, as soon as we have the document the painting will be sent.
