The painting depicts some shepherds bathing in the lake formed by the waterfalls of the Temple of the Sibyl at Tivoli, a subject popular with northern landscape painters during the 17th century.
A similar version of the present painting, by the same artist is in the Accademia di San Luca (inv. 317) (see Busiri Vici, Jacob de Heusch (1656-1701) un pittore olandese a Roma detto "il copia", Rome, 1997, p. 142, n. 43).
The present lot is accompanied by a copy of the expertise by Caterina Volpi.
