Jacopo Negretti, detto Palma Il Giovane

[ translate ]

Jacopo Negretti, detto Palma il Giovane
Venice 1544 - 1628 Venice
The Holy Family with the Little St. John the Baptiste
Oil on canvas, relined
73,5 x 81 cm
In an original Sansovino frame from the late 16th century.

Like his great-uncle Palma Vecchio, his real name was Jacopo Negretti (sometimes spelled "Negreti" or "Nigretti"), but he consistently called himself and his family "Palma" in his signatures, monograms, and the numerous handwritten comments on his drawings.
Palma was born the son of Antonio Palma, a painter from Serina near Bergamo and a nephew of Palma Vecchio. In the 17th century he was given the nickname il Giovane to better distinguish him from his great uncle of the same name.

In a richly carved frame in Sansovino style is a painting depicting the Holy Family with St. John the Baptist. He carries a gift with an allegorical meaning; the fruits, in which apples, plums and a pear can be seen, are symbols of the Passion of Christ and the Redemption of Man. This iconography is very rare, but can be found especially in Veneto, where from the middle of the 15th century, with the beginning of Squarcionismo and then with Mantegna and Crivelli, these details became widespread. Born in 1550, the painter Jacopo Palma il Giovane had his first training in the workshop of his father Antonio. After these first years of apprenticeship, he moved to Rome after meeting Guidubaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, who appreciated his talent. Palma's style, however, is never based on that of the Roman manner, but unfolds its greatness through the combination with fluid painting and is marked in the Venetian style, which is probably confirmed by the last fundamental collaboration with Titian in the last months of his life.
