Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed as First Lady to JFK's Cousin Anne Gargan, on Joseph P. Kennedy's Hospital Stay

[ translate ]

ALS in pencil, signed “Jackie,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, White House letterhead, no date but likely circa December 1961, following Joseph P. Kennedy's stroke. Handwritten letter to Anne Gargan, in full: "I called Grandma to see if I could come to hospital and she said not to go—will you please call me any time of day or night if I should—or could come—if it would be any help to you or Grandpa—What would he do without you—All my prayers are with you both." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original White House envelope, addressed by Jacqueline Kennedy to "Miss Anne Gargan."

Ann Gargan was JFK’s first cousin, the daughter of Rose Kennedy’s younger sister, Agnes Fitzgerald Gargan. Orphaned at a young age, Ann and her siblings remained closely connected to the Kennedy family, spending considerable time with their cousins at Hyannis Port and other family homes. She later became a devoted caretaker to her uncle, Joseph P. Kennedy, remaining at the former ambassador’s side during the years of disability that followed his 1961 stroke; through her, JFK maintained an especially personal connection to his ailing father.

From the estate of Ann Gargan King.
