Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed to Joseph P. Kennedy: "Treasure Island has started John on a great career as a pirate—that is what he wants to be now"
Jackie thanks "Grandpa" for Christmas gifts: "Treasure Island has started John on a great career as a pirate—that is what he wants to be now"
ALS signed “Jackie,” three pages on two sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, Sun Valley letterhead, January 3, [no year]. Handwritten letter to Joseph P. Kennedy, beginning "Dearest Grandpa," in full: "I don't know how to even start this letter—because I have NEVER had anything so beautiful or precious or generous or touching to thank anyone for in my life, as the dazzling diamond pin you have me for Christmas. I will love it more than anything in the world, for its beauty, but most of all because it comes from you. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the box—I thought there must be a mistake! I should have known that only you would think of doing something so wonderful at Christmas.
Please know, even though I can never find the words to tell you—how much I adore it—and that I will think of you with all my love whenever I wear it and whenever I don't. And the children loved their Christmas presents so—what could be two more wonderful books to give them—than a collection of Dickens for Carolina, and Treasure Island for John? I have read them both till I am nearly hoarse here in Sun Valley—Treasure Island has started John on a great career as a pirate—that is what he wants to be now. I enclose Caroline's thank you drawing—with all my wishes dearest Grandpa for the New Year—and all my thanks for the most fabulous present ever." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Jacqueline Kennedy's own hand to "Hon. Joseph P. Kennedy, 1095 N. Ocean Blvd., Palm Beach, Florida," and franked in the upper right, "Jacqueline Kennedy, Air Mail."
From the estate of Ann Gargan King.
